Portia is the signature release from the Portia winemaking estate in Spain’s exciting Ribera del Duero region. It is the outcome of a venture that began in the 1990s, when the Martinez family (owners of Bodegas Faustino, a leading producer of wines from the Rioja), purchased nearly 400 acres of terrain enjoying an eastern and southern orientation in Ribero del Duero. Vineyards were planted chiefly with Tempranillo (known locally as Tinta Fina del Pais) at an average density of 1,200 vines per acre. Wine maker notes Alcoholic fermentation takes place in stainless steel vats at a controlled temperature of 79ºF. Malolactic fermentation is followed by maturation in new French and American oak barrels for a period of 12 months. The wine spends an additional 6 months in bottle before being released.
